Can I care?
The adult care sector has a huge variety of roles on offer. Many of them can be challenging but very rewarding. Working in adult care will expose you to:
- Mental health issues
- Physical health issues
- Emotional health issues
- Learning difficulties
- Interacting with adults with specific communication needs.
- Interacting with adults who feel lonely and vulnerable
Before deciding that a role in the adult care sector is a career path you’d like to go down we highly recommend a taster day or some volunteering. These are excellent ways of trying the jobs out before committing yourself to them!
Adult social care roles require different levels of qualifications and experience, but the same values and behaviours are necessary in every role.
You will need to have good listening and communication skills and be able to interact with different people from a variety of backgrounds who have a wide range of needs.
You will need to be organised and enjoy being part of a busy team, staying calm under pressure.
You will get to know the people you’re helping care for, building relationships with each individual and their families.
You will be passionate about supporting people to live a more independent and fulfilling life.
You will encourage and support people to have a choice in the care they receive.
